CHAT ’n’ Choose craft sessions are set to return to Devonport after a year-long hiatus, thanks to a new collaboration between the Devonport City Council, Lifeway Baptist Church and Devonport High School.
Last week The Zone hosted a tutors’ morning tea, where tutors and coordinating staff got together to meet each other and showcase a variety of different crafts.
Devonport City Council community development officer Charmane Sheehan said she was excited the sessions were back and couldn’t wait to get them up and
running in the community.
''They haven’t been around for about 12 months,’’ she said.
''Basically, we heard a whisper that they were sadly missed so the council jumped at the chance.’’
Devonport High School teacher David Hughes said initially he wanted to volunteer his kids to help set up and clean up the sessions but soon realised the value of
having the students also involved in the class.
''We are always looking for ways to get these kids involved in the community,’’ he said.
''It’s (Chat ’n’ Choose) is a very proactive thing for them to be involved in.’’
While the students will be helping tidy up the craft after the sessions, Mr Hughes said it would also be greatly beneficial for them to mingle with some of the older members of the community.
''We are always looking for that blend (of generations),’’ he said.
Mr Hughes said Devonport had a generation gap in its society and any way that they could try to bridge that gap was positive.
Devonport Mayor Steve Martin said the reintroduction of the Chat ’n’ Choose program was of great benefit to the
Devonport community and wanted to iterate the council’s involvement was not monetary.
''Council is all about creating a community, not just infrastructure,’’ he said.
''This (Chat ’n’ Choose) is an important initiative to begin achieving that (in Devonport).’’
Chat ’n’ Choose craft sessions will be held at the Lifeway Centre (Baptist Church), William St. The sessions will run each Thursday from 10am until noon. Sessions have a six-week turn around period. For more information phone Barb Boutcher or Charmane Sheehan at The Zone on 6423 4099.
